About Georgia Civic
Georgia Civic is a free, independent civic-data project for the Athens area. It collects public records that local governments already publish — but scatter across county websites, agenda PDFs, and state portals — and puts them in one place: a map, a feed, and simple pages anyone can search, share, and check.
The idea is simple: you shouldn't need to know six county websites to find out what's happening around your home.
What we track
- Rezonings & development — every rezoning case parsed from county planning and commission agendas, geocoded to its parcel, with the requested zoning change and hearing date.
- Construction permits — land-disturbance permits (Notices of Intent) filed with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for construction that disturbs about an acre or more: subdivisions, commercial and industrial sites, and individual lots in larger developments. Each pin links to the permit form the builder actually filed. A permit means work is planned or underway — not that anything is finished — and a site stays permitted through a multi-year build; most road-department and agricultural projects fall outside this permit's scope.
- Restaurant & food-service inspections — health inspection scores, violations, and multi-year score history for 400+ facilities, from the Georgia Department of Public Health's public portal. Each facility has its own page.
- School ratings & calendars — every public school's official CCRPI score with multi-year trends, on per-school pages, plus all eight local districts' (and UGA's) academic calendars on one page.
- Public meetings — every upcoming government meeting the county portals list (commissions, boards of education, planning, elections boards), so residents can attend while decisions are still being made.
- Roadwork & closures — active construction and road closures on state routes in the six counties, from the Georgia DOT's 511 traveler-information system, with lanes affected and expected end dates.
Where the data comes from
Every item is collected nightly from an official public source, and every item on the site links back to its original document:
- County agendas — the published agenda portals of Athens-Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties.
- Georgia EPD — construction stormwater permit filings in the EPD Online System's public application search (geos.epd.georgia.gov); every construction item links to the submitted permit form.
- Georgia DPH — the state's public food-service inspection portal (ga.healthinspections.us).
- GOSA — the Governor's Office of Student Achievement's public school-performance downloads (CCRPI School Grades); calendars are entered by hand from each district's published calendar.
- Georgia DOT — the official Georgia 511 traveler-information system, via its developer API.
Accuracy
This site is an independent civic project, not an official government record. Agendas and permit forms are parsed automatically and may occasionally miss or misread an item; map locations are approximate (construction sites are pinned at coordinates the permit applicant supplied, sanity-checked against county boundaries). The county's or state's published documents — linked from every item — are always authoritative. If you spot an error, please tell us and we'll fix it.
